'But it's only a children's book' - children's literature as a vehicle of manipulative ideological dissemination
Moravčíková, Hana ; Clark, Colin Steele (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
The historical era between 1850 and 1950 is known to be a turbulent period reflected not only in adult literature but also in the texts written for children. This unusually rich period in terms of political, social and ideological development certainly influenced most parts of the world. However, it was particularly important for England mainly for the transition of the Victorian era and Edwardian period to the modern history initiated by the WW I. Throughout this period many new ideologies arose and scientific discoveries were more numerous than ever. In 1859, for instance, Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published and initiated the still on-going war period between Christianity and science. At the same time, the concept of childhood started to be understood in a different way and books written for children became a common commodity converting the end of 18th century in the Golden Age of children's literature. However, according to Peter Hunt's publication Understanding Children's Literature, 'all texts are inevitably infused by ideologies'. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is firstly, to study the way in which ideologies are incorporated in the texts for children (overt or covert) and secondly, the extent to which the texts for children become a vehicle of...
Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914.
Kočvar, Jan ; Skřivan, Aleš (advisor) ; Županič, Jan (referee) ; Tejchman, Miroslav (referee)
Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914 PhDr. Jan Kočvar My Ph.D. thesis evaluates Austro-Hungarian activities in China between 1894 and 1914, especially their political aspects. I would like to explain the nature of Austro-Hungarian contacts with China and their significance for the Dual Monarchy. The main source for my thesis was constituted by the materials in Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna. Austria-Hungary concluded diplomatic relations with China in 1869, but her position in China remained weak. After the Sino-Japanese War, the Far East became a focus of interest of the Great Powers, and in 1896 was appointed the first Austro-Hungarian Minister to China. During the Scramble for Concessions in late nineties, Austro-Hungarian navy conducted survey of Chinese littoral and contemplated an establishment of a naval base in China, but finally rejected this idea. Austro-Hungarian trade and other interests in China were too insignificant to justify such an action. The peak of Austro-Hungarian presence is connected with the Boxer Uprising of 1900. Austria-Hungary didn't contribute to its genesis. During the uprising, Austro-Hungarian sailors were fighting in besieged Legation Quarter in Beijing, as well as in the metropolitan province of Zhili. Thereafter, Austro-Hungarian diplomacy took...
Imperialism and the Rise of China
Templin, Kristin ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This thesis covers a historical comparison analysis between the Ancient Chinese, British and American Empires in order to compare what activities that China is currently taking in the 21st century that resemble the behaviour of the United Kingdom and United States while they were building their empires. The thesis, using the theoretical concepts of Alfred Mahan and John Mearsheimer and the supporting arguments of Paul Kennedy, focuses on soft power tools including free trade agreements and social networks as well as tangible assets such as infrastructure development, expansion through annexation and/or colonialism and naval capacity. I have included Mahan's theory of sea power as a necessity to achieve supremacy as it corresponds closely with the development of the British and American Empires. I have also used Mearsheimer's theory of offensive realism as it helps explain the US' rise to hegemony and can help provide guidance on China's future strategy. This comparison is then used, along with the opinions of some of the most well-respected geopolitical analysts and historians of the 21st century, in the final chapter of this thesis to address the geopolitical issues associated with China's rise including the United States' response.
EU's Imperialism: Contemporary CSDP Missions
Šmardová, Martina ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The thesis focuses on the contemporary CSDP missions of the European Union from the point of view of critical literatures on imperialism, state-building and capacity-building. State-building and capacity-building gradually became dominant approaches towards weak and failing states which are associated with the exercise of power and influence in the critical literature, e.g. in David Chandler on whose argument this thesis draws on. The thesis develops Chandler's argument by means of analysis of intervention practices in the selected cases.

Moral Message of Heart of Darkness from the Point of View of Its Contemporary Adaptations
Živný, Vilém ; Topolovská, Tereza (advisor) ; Chalupský, Petr (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares Joseph Conrad's famous novel Heart of Darkness to its movie adaptation Apocalypse Now and to its video game adaptation Spec Ops: The Line. It is mainly focused on thematic similarities, since both adaptations are loose and modernized versions of the original story. In analyzing primarily the theme of imperialism in each of the select works, the thesis uncovers the reasons for updating the settings and plot for the adaptations. It demonstrates how the theme of imperialism is presented to new audiences and the way in which each adaptation approaches the theme. The thesis studies each concerned work from an ethical standpoint.
Shifts in Polarity in the Post-war Global System - Attempted European Re-colonisation in Asia
Huntley, Matthew David ; Garlick, Jeremy Alan (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
France and Britains failure in their attempt to re-colonise parts of South-East Asia after the Second World War came out of miscalculations made by their governments and their state institutions. The international system did not transition immediately after the war from multi-polarity to bipolarity. A window of opportunity was available for the two countries to regain influence in the region. The external political environment in the region was not unfavourable to a return of European colonial powers and there were no immediate viable challengers. Foreign policy misjudgements, weak domestic political systems and changes in priorities all contributed to the decline in influence of these two European colonial powers in South-East Asia. This thesis applies realist principles in combination with aspects of constructivism, while observing system and unit levels, to ascertain the root causes of the decline of British and French influence in the region.
